Jessie Sanders arrived at veterinary school with a more particular passion. \u201cI was the one weird fish kid,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was an interest that had surprised even her. In college, Dr. Sanders had started volunteering at an aquarium, hoping to work with the whales. Instead, she found herself assigned to the fish team \u2014 and falling hard for her finned charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI just love fish,\u201d she said. \u201cI love the way they\u2019re built. I love the way they interact with the environment. And there\u2019s still so much that we just don\u2019t know about all the little internal workings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Today, Dr. Sanders runs <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/cafishvet.com\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Aquatic Veterinary Services<\/a>, with patients that include carnival goldfish, pet store bettas and prizewinning koi worth tens of thousands of dollars. Last year, she became one of the first 10 veterinarians to receive a board certification in fish practice, a wholly new accreditation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Sanders spoke with The New York Times about life as a fish veterinarian.
