I\u2019m fond of it, even though it looks a little sloppy. Sometimes I\u2019ll debate whether to toss it, and then gently put it back on the shelf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As it turns out, a lot of us have strong attachments to things we make \u2014 even when they\u2019re kind of hideous, said Michael Norton, a professor of business administration at Harvard and the author of \u201cThe Ritual Effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Norton once took a stone-carving class, he told me, and tried to chisel a symbol (\u201cthe best description I can give is a circle shape with flames\u201d), but part of the stone broke off \u201cso it looked like it was made by a toddler.\u201d Yet every time he moved homes, he carefully wrapped the stone nub in bubble tape and brought it with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This is because we often see the things we make as part of our identities, said Dr. Norton, who has conducted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/ris\/Publication%20Files\/11-091.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> on how people come to value objects. Our creations help us \u201cfeel a sense of confidence and a sense of mastery that is really hard to get sometimes in other places,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Making something with your hands is also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/28\/well\/mind\/hands-mindfulness-typing-writing.html\" title>good for your brain<\/a>.
