Many doulas, relied upon for pregnancy and childbirth support, have gone virtual. Experts say that\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n

Kanwal Haq, a New York-based doula, was on a plane home from a vacation last September when she received a text from her client: \u201cIt\u2019s game day here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The baby was arriving a week earlier than planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are keeping me in triage right now though because I\u2019m only 3cm,\u201d her client, Alyssa Coats-Clark, wrote. \u201cBut boy do these contractions hurt!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s get BABY BOY EZRA HERE!!!\u201d Ms. Haq wrote back, adding a series of suggestions for what Ms. Coats-Clark could ask the nurses for in order to reduce her discomfort. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It was the first birth Ms. Haq, 34, had helped with. And, though she hadn\u2019t envisioned doing so while in the air, the plan was always to support Ms. Coats-Clark, who lives in Indiana, remotely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ms. Haq, in conversation over text with her client, as well as with Ms. Coats-Clark\u2019s husband and mother, was able to support the delivery from afar, offering guidance about labor positions, pain-relief and insights into how things would likely progress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
