That pitch has helped prebiotic soft drink brands like Poppi and Olipop stand out in the soda aisle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The drinks contain <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/28\/well\/eat\/prebiotic-supplements-gut-health.html\" title>prebiotics<\/a>, or dietary fibers that can\u2019t be digested by humans, but can feed the beneficial microbes that live in our guts, said Hannah Holscher, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. (Probiotic products, by comparison, contain live microbes themselves.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But nutrition experts say you don\u2019t need a special soda to reap those benefits: Many foods, like garlic, onions, peas, beans, lentils, grains and some fruits, are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/medicine\/translational\/gastroenterology\/prebiotic\/faq#3\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">naturally rich in prebiotic fibers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf you eat a high fiber diet, you\u2019re taking care of your prebiotics pretty well,\u201d said Marion Nestle, an emeritus professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Inulin, the main prebiotic fiber used in these sodas, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/advances.nutrition.org\/article\/S2161-8313(22)00074-6\/fulltext#:~:text=However%2C%20most%20commercially%20available%20ITF%20are%20synthesized%20from%20sucrose%20or%20extracted%20from%20chicory%20roots%2C%20Jerusalem%20artichoke%2C%20and%20agave%20(11.).\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">can be isolated from plants<\/a>, such as agave or chicory root, said Dr. Holscher, who has accepted travel and speaking fees from Beneo, a company that manufactures ingredients, including prebiotic fibers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The amount of fiber in prebiotic beverages varies. A can of Orange Cream Poppi has two grams of dietary fiber; a Strawberry Vanilla Olipop has nine grams.
