If she didn\u2019t change her lifestyle, her bones would become increasingly brittle, putting her at high risk for spine, hip and other life-altering fractures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Grufferman had always been active, chasing after her two daughters and walking her dog around Manhattan. But she hadn\u2019t done much formal exercise since \u201cthe Jane Fonda days\u201d of her 20s, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Once she learned about her low bone density, she began training to run-walk the New York City Marathon and started doing daily planks and squats. She practiced standing on one foot whenever she could, to improve her balance. Today, more than 15 years later, her <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/bone-mineral-density-tests-what-numbers-mean\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bone density<\/a> has held steady and she\u2019s training for her 18th marathon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m a walking, talking, breathing example that it\u2019s never too late to take action,\u201d Ms. Grufferman, 67, said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But you don\u2019t have to run marathons to protect your bones.
