A neighbor took the daisy off my hands, and in return gifted me some iris and lamb\u2019s ear that he needed to thin out of his yard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For me, gardening is a workout, meditation and opportunity to socialize with my neighbors all rolled into one. And while I\u2019m admittedly biased, research backs up some of my observations that gardening can have real benefits for your <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7371129\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mind and body<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-kypbrf eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-44939c76\">Gardening gets you moving.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shoveling mulch, pulling weeds and lugging around a watering can all <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254623001084\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">qualify as moderate-intensity physical activities<\/a>. And gardeners tend to report <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.ashs.org\/horttech\/view\/journals\/horttech\/20\/4\/article-p705.xml\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">higher levels of physical activity<\/a> overall, compared with non-gardeners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In one <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(22)00303-5\/fulltext\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recent study<\/a> conducted in Colorado, for example, people who joined a community garden logged nearly six extra minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared with people who were on the waiting list for a plot.
