It is a leading cause of stroke and heart attack, and often comes with no obvious early symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of the best ways to both prevent high blood pressure and lower it is by working out (as well as an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/19\/well\/eat\/sodium-salt-diet.html\" title>improved diet<\/a>). That\u2019s in part because consistent and frequent exercise prompts your body to form new capillaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s like producing extra release valves for your heart,\u201d said John Bauer, the education content director for the International Sports Sciences Association. \u201cSo there\u2019s less pressure on the existing blood vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But which exercises are the most effective? Numerous studies have found that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thieme-connect.com\/products\/ejournals\/abstract\/10.1055\/s-0035-1565062\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">yoga,<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/26\/well\/blood-pressure-workout-wall-squat.html\" title>wall sits<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jch.14000\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cardiovascular exercise<\/a> are particularly helpful for lowering blood pressure. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/20\/well\/move\/tai-chi-workout.html\" title>Tai chi<\/a> is another gentle, low-stress exercise that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2814872\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">some studies<\/a> suggest is especially good for hypertension. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAny exercise will help, but it\u2019s the framework you put around it that matters most,\u201d said Dr. Lili Barouch, the director of sports cardiology and an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This framework should follow a few rules around things like intensity, regularity and effective warm-ups, and include regular consultations with your doctor. Blood pressure spikes can cause health emergencies, though other effects are more subtle.
