While she\u2019s in Florida this month, she will miss her daughter\u2019s final high school prom; she missed it last year, too, due to her caregiving duties<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The drugs Ms. Le\u2019s father takes to manage pain can \u201cnegatively impact how he treats people,\u201d she said. When he becomes volatile, Ms. Le said, she mostly tries to ignore it and \u201cnot add to the stress of the situation.\u201d She tells herself to \u201cjust care for him and just let it go.\u201d But sometimes, when she\u2019s exhausted, his temper grates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat runs through my brain is: \u2018A simple thank you would really go a long way,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201c\u2018You have me, or you have a nursing home.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Caregiving can be fraught for the estimated 53 million Americans who assist family members and friends. And factors like financial strain and isolation can add to psychological distress. In a 2017 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/research\/surveys_statistics\/ltc\/2017\/family-caregiving-roles.doi.10.26419-2Fres.00175.001.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">survey of 1,081 caregivers conducted by AARP<\/a>, 51 percent of respondents reported feeling worried or stressed. But there was a surprising upside: The majority \u2014 91 percent \u2014 also reported feeling pleased that they were able to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">How can caregivers hold on to that feeling amid the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/09\/well\/family\/caregivers-anger-illness.html\" title>stress, fatigue and resentment<\/a> that also come with the role?
