But there has virtually been no testing on farms, and health officials know little about who may be infected.<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even as it has become increasingly clear that the bird flu outbreak on the nation\u2019s dairy farms began months earlier \u2014 and is probably much more widespread \u2014 than previously thought, federal authorities have emphasized that the virus poses little risk to humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet there is a group of people who are at high risk for infection: the estimated 100,000 men and women who work on those farms. There has been no widespread testing to see how many may be infected. No one has been vaccinated against bird flu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That leaves the workers and their families vulnerable to a poorly tracked pathogen. And it poses broader public health risks. If the virus were to find its way into the wider population, experts say, dairy workers would be a likely route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe have no idea if this virus is going to evolve to become a pandemic strain, but we know today that farmworkers are being exposed, and we have good reasons to think that they are getting sick,\u201d said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A majority of dairy farmworkers are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nationaldairyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Nationwide-Dairy-Labor-Survey_FARM-Workforce-Development.pdf#page=13\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish-speaking<\/a> immigrants, often undocumented, who may not have paid sick leave or be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmworkerjustice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/2024-Dairy-Report-Final.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">protected by occupational safety laws<\/a>.
