Coli in Food Makes People Sick"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<p id=\"article-summary\" class=\"css-1n0orw4 e1wiw3jv0\">The bacteria sickens an estimated 265,000 Americans each year.<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last week, federal officials announced recalls of ground beef and organic walnuts because they were potentially contaminated with E. coli bacteria that can make people sick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The recalls involve more than <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/recalls-alerts\/cargill-meat-solutions-recalls-ground-beef-products-due-possible-e--coli-o157h7\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">16,000 pounds<\/a> of ground beef distributed by Cargill Meat Solutions and sold at Wal-Mart stores in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cargill.com\/story\/statement-on-us-beef-product-recall\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">11 states<\/a>, as well as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/walnuts-04-24\/index.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">organic shelled walnuts<\/a> sold in bulk in natural food and co-op <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/store-names-and-locations-affected-products-outbreak-investigation-e-coli-o157h7-related-bulk\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stores<\/a> in 19 states. So far, the recalled walnuts have been associated with 12 illnesses, including seven hospitalizations, in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/walnuts-04-24\/map.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Washington State and California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No illnesses have been reported from the ground beef recall, although ground beef remains one of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/foodborne-pathogens\/escherichia-coli-e-coli\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the most common<\/a> sources of illnesses from these bacteria, which are responsible for an estimated 265,000 illnesses annually. The E. coli implicated in the ongoing walnut and ground beef recalls are a type of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Because these bacteria eventually work their way out of animal intestines and into feces, they can also contaminate farm soil, which is why E. coli<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>outbreaks are also often tied to produce, Dr. Dudley explained.
