Kristi Noem of South Dakota has been the subject of fierce bipartisan attacks for her decision to shoot and kill her family dog, a 14-month-old German wirehaired pointer named Cricket. Ms. Noem has repeatedly defended her actions, which are detailed in her forthcoming memoir, in which she says the dog was \u201caggressive,\u201d \u201cuntrainable\u201d and \u201cdangerous to anyone she came in contact with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Sunday, she suggested that President Biden <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/05\/us\/politics\/kristi-noem-biden-dog.html\" title>should have considered<\/a> killing his own dog, Commander, a German shepherd who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/06\/us\/politics\/biden-commander-dog-bites-secret-service.html\" title>was banished<\/a> from the White House last year after repeatedly biting Secret Service officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cJoe Biden\u2019s dog has attacked 24 Secret Service people,\u201d Ms. Noem, a Republican, said in an interview on CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d \u201cSo how many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Experts said that there were some circumstances in which dogs are so aggressive that they should be euthanized. But euthanasia should be an option of last resort, they said, used only when a dog poses a serious danger and other potential solutions have been ruled out.
