As the saying goes, \u201csitting is the new smoking.\u201d At the same time, decades of studies have shown that walking \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/09\/well\/move\/steps-walking-health-benefits.html\" title>even just 4,000<\/a> steps a day \u2014 is good for the mind and body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Treadmill desks \u2014 a setup involving a standing desk with a treadmill beneath it \u2014 seem like an ingenious antidote to sedentary office life, and a way to get in a few more healthy steps. But are they worth the investment?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As treadmill desks have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/236131\/us-wholesale-sales-of-treadmills-consumer-segment\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">become more mainstream<\/a>, researchers have begun to ask how effective they are. A growing body of studies, though often limited, suggests they do help keep people moving, adding perhaps an average of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s41542-021-00091-8\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">two extra miles<\/a> of walking per day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">What\u2019s more, one <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9883822\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">small 2023 study<\/a> suggested regular use of treadmill desks increased peoples\u2019 energy, improved their moods and, in some cases, even made them more productive at their jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHaving the ability to add in little bits of activity over the course of a day can add up,\u201d said Akinkunle Oye-Somefun, a doctoral candidate at York University in Toronto and the lead author of a recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12889-021-12094-9\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">meta-analysis<\/a> of treadmill-desk research.
