Possibly even as far back as high school. In nearly every town in the United States, you can find <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/28\/well\/move\/fall-running-training.html\" title>a 5K, 10K<\/a>, half marathon or full marathon to run. But it\u2019s far less likely that you\u2019ll find an organized track meet to run a 100-, 200- or 400-meter dash (though <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/runningintheusa.com\/classic\/list\/southeast\/upcoming\/track-meet\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">they do exist<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One reason many adults avoid sprinting is that the thought of past injuries (or possible future ones) can be frightening. Another, of course, is that sprinting is hard, often leaving us doubled over gasping for air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But hard is the idea. Sprinting puts an enormous amount of stress on our physical systems, which \u2014 when done safely \u2014 makes us stronger, more resilient and more fit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-kypbrf eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-116c195\">Why sprint?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Put simply, sprinting is running at or near your top speed. \u201cIt is one of the movements that gives the biggest bang for buck,\u201d said Matt Sanderson, a director at the fitness brand SOFLETE.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sprinting helps <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americansportandfitness.com\/blogs\/fitness-blog\/build-fast-twitch-muscle-for-explosive-performance#:~:text=Sprinting%3A%20Sprinting%20is%20another%20great,to%20develop%20coordination%20and%20balance.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">build and maintain<\/a> fast-twitch muscle fibers.
