That can lead to serious complications.<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Around one in five adults between the ages of 40 to 79 is taking five or more prescription drugs, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db347.htm\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to data<\/a> from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And the older patients are, the more likely it is they\u2019re taking even more medications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But taking many medicines simultaneously, known among medical experts as polypharmacy, increases people\u2019s risk of experiencing severe side effects and drug interactions, said Dr. Nina Blachman, an assis\u00adtant professor of medicine and geriatrics at the N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Studies show that taking multiple medications is associated with a faster <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK574575\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">decline in memory<\/a> in some patients with mild cognitive impairment, and with a greater risk of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3864987\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">falls<\/a> among people with balance problems or weakened muscles. And certain combinations of drugs can lead to excessive bleeding, dangerously low blood sugar or other serious complications that lead to hundreds of older adults being <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/lowninstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/medication-overload-lown-web.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">hospitalized<\/a> every day.<\/p>\n<p>While medicines can be critical for improving our quality of life, it is important to understand how people end up taking too many drugs unnecessarily and when to ask for help trimming your prescription list.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-kypbrf eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2ff53b8c\">How prescriptions can pile up<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As people age, they develop more health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and high blood pressure, and \u201cend up on more and more medications,\u201d Dr. Blachman said. Many are never taken off the drugs they\u2019ve been prescribed for years, even if they no longer need them or if there are newer formulations available that can treat different symptoms simultaneously.. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Patients sometimes also see a variety of medical providers, each of whom may prescribe medication without necessarily communicating with one another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sometimes medical professionals may prescribe drugs to treat the side effects of another medication, in what doctors refer to as a \u201cprescription cascade.\u201d For example, people who take certain over-the-counter pain medicines called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may experience an increase in blood pressure, which doctors may misdiagnose as a new ailment and prescribe calcium channel blockers as a treatment.
