But you don\u2019t need to be shy about discussing them with a gastroenterologist, a doctor who treats conditions of the digestive system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019ve heard it all,\u201d said Sophie Balzora, a gastroenterologist and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health. \u201cAnd we want to normalize talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So I took her advice and plunged in, asking her and other experts what they want you to know about your gut.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-7e11d892\"><span>Acid reflux and heartburn are not the same thing.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People often use the terms \u201cacid reflux\u201d and \u201cheartburn\u201d interchangeably, but it\u2019s important not to mix them up, said Christine Lee, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Acid reflux, which affects <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31866243\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nearly a third<\/a> of U.S. adults weekly, is the backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Sometimes it progresses to a more serious condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Heartburn, on the other hand, is a symptom, not a condition. A burning pain in the chest can be caused by acid reflux or GERD.
