That\u2019s because Monday is a running day, and I hate running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I have always hated running. In elementary school, I dreaded the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/20\/well\/move\/presidential-fitness-test-adult.html\" title>mile run test<\/a> and was always in the back with my fellow gym class rejects. In college, I was the only baseball player who could stretch a double into a single.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I\u2019m 6 feet 7 inches tall and overly leggy, with knees that wobble in six different directions when I run. And yet, it\u2019s crucial \u2014 especially in middle age \u2014 to challenge one\u2019s body with a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/14\/well\/move\/walking-running-health-benefits.html\" title>little intense exercise<\/a> every week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I don\u2019t have access to a pool or lake, my ceilings are too low for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/11\/well\/move\/trampoline-exercise-health-benefits.html\" title>trampolines<\/a> and doing more than one <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/15\/well\/move\/hiit-workout-beginner.html\" title>HIIT workout<\/a> per week quickly gets boring. Running offers intensity while distracting me with pretty scenery. Besides, 20 minutes later, I feel amazing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After years of tinkering with ways to start running, I have finally come up with a three-part recipe for learning to tolerate this horrible form of exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But before you start, make sure you are doing fun movements on other days. If your only exercise is running and, like me, you hate it, you won\u2019t stick with it. Walk if you like that, swim if it\u2019s your jam. I have a kickboxing dummy, a pull-up bar and some <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/17\/well\/move\/gym-workout-battle-rope.html\" title>battle ropes<\/a> that I genuinely look forward to using.
