Divorce rates in the United States have generally fallen in recent years<\/a>, but not among older Americans.<\/p>\n

The rate of \u201cgray divorce\u201d \u2014 typically defined as divorce between those 50 and up \u2014 doubled between 1990 and 2010. Nowadays, more than a third<\/a> of divorces are in that age group, and research suggests women are more likely than men to initiate<\/a> these splits.<\/p>\n

All of which has upended our expectations around who gets divorced, when and why.<\/p>\n
