And then that means I\u2019ll be this age when I become a mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">She absorbed the message for years \u2014 \u201cfrom rom-coms and so much societal pressure\u201d \u2014 that she should be married and having babies by age 30, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">For the most part, Ms. Shara now finds that expectation silly. She has great friends and a fulfilling career and is unwilling to settle for a partner who isn\u2019t a true teammate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">If it weren\u2019t for her pesky biological clock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI would still <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">love<\/em> to have kids on the soon-ish side,\u201d Ms. Shara said. \u201cBut there is an opportunity cost toward rushing dating and marriage and courtship and trying to find the right person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The stubborn notion that women\u2019s fertility falls off a cliff at 35 has slowly shifted in recent years, thanks to changing cultural norms and leaps in assisted reproductive technology. Despite growing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-birthrate-proposals.html\" title>alarm<\/a> among conservatives over the United States\u2019 historically low birthrate, women over 35 are actually giving birth in relatively large numbers.
