Those toxic metals can pollute waterways and drinking water supplies and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/17\/climate\/epa-coal-ash-landfills.html\" title>have been linked to health effects<\/a> including cancer, birth defects and developmental delays in children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The E.P.A.\u2019s move was a victory for utilities that had lobbied the Trump administration to delay the cleanup requirements. But environmentalists warned that it threatened the health of the predominantly poor communities near coal plants nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Under a rule <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/25\/climate\/biden-power-plants-pollution.html\" title>finalized by the Biden administration<\/a> last year, utilities had until February 2026 to report to the E.P.A. any contamination from their coal ash landfills.
