Medications work for some symptoms, but can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/06\/well\/mind\/antidepressant-facts.html\" title>exacerbate others<\/a>. Cognitive behavioral therapy is effective for many patients, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2024\/09\/cognitive-behaviora-therapy-depression.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">but not all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But there\u2019s one strategy that seems to work for most people and almost all experts endorse, and that\u2019s regular exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Decades of research have established that exercise has a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/29\/health\/adolescents-exercise-mental-health.html\" title>positive effect<\/a> on mental health. In studies of patients with mild to moderate depression, for example, a wide range of exercise regimens has been shown to be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/384\/bmj-2023-075847\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">as effective as medications<\/a> like SSRIs (though the best results generally involve a combination of the two).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Moving regularly can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11298280\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">improve sleep<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0378512217308563\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reduce stress<\/a>. Exercise boosts blood flow, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/well\/move\/inflammation-exercise.html\" title>decreases inflammation<\/a> and improves brain plasticity.
