And with Benadryl around <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldallergyorganizationjournal.org\/article\/S1939-4551(25)00002-X\/fulltext\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">since the 1940s<\/a>, it\u2019s become the \u201cKleenex\u201d of antihistamines, said Dr. Anna Wolfson, an allergist at Massachusetts General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But experts believe it\u2019s time to say goodbye because of how older antihistamines like Benadryl cross the blood-brain barrier, causing grogginess and increasing the risk of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30046925\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">falls<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/aacijournal.biomedcentral.com\/counter\/pdf\/10.1186\/s13223-019-0375-9.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">car accidents<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/25\/health\/dementia-drugs-anticholinergic.html\" title>potentially even dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you\u2019re on a deserted island and Benadryl is the only allergy drug available, you should take it, Dr. Wolfson said.
