Many snakes will secrete this musk from these glands, located on their undersides, near their tails, rubbing their whole bodies in it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Vander Meer and his colleague, Paul Weldon, who was with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.animalbehaviorsociety.org\/NEWSLETTERS\/68-1\/memorial.php\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">before his death in 2022<\/a>, wanted to test these observations in the lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Weldon acquired scent-gland secretion samples from several species: the Middle American burrowing python, boa constrictor, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/13\/science\/ball-pythons-social-snakes.html\" title>ball python<\/a>, king cobra, timber rattlesnake and unicolor cribo.
