X deleted some of the posts on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early on Saturday, xAI said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/grok\/status\/1943916977481036128?s=46&amp;t=mTiIwU_XGeFY8FjVfo8Unw\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement on its X account<\/a> that \u201cwe deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It added that \u201cdeprecated code made @grok susceptible to existing X user posts; including when such posts contained extremist views.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The A.I. start-up said the problems began with a code update on Monday that restored an older set of instructions that the company had used to guide Grok. Grok\u2019s X account used these instructions to respond to queries from X users. The issues continued until the account was temporarily disabled on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The outdated set of instructions told the chatbot to be \u201cmaximally based,\u201d slang that refers to being true to oneself and has been adopted by the far right in recent years for comments that go against \u201cwoke\u201d or mainstream narratives. The instructions also told Grok to be unafraid \u201cto offend people who are politically correct\u201d and to understand the \u201ctone, context and language\u201d of X users\u2019 posts and mimic it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This led Grok to mirror X users too closely, xAI, said in its statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company has taken to X before to explain errant behavior by Grok.
