Though lung cancer screening by CT scan can be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1102873\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">lifesaving<\/a> and insurers are required to cover it, the test is a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-force\/lung-health-barometer\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">little-known<\/a> option. Less than <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/state-of-lung-cancer\/key-findings\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">20 percent<\/a> of eligible people get screened, compared with the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/progressreport.cancer.gov\/detection\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">70 to 80 percent<\/a> who get mammograms, colonoscopies and Pap smears, federal data shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These challenges are exacerbated in West Virginia, which has the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/media\/press-releases\/wv-solc-2024\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">highest smoking rate<\/a> in the country and a largely rural population without easy <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/cancer.wvumedicine.org\/about-us\/programs\/mobile-cancer-screening-program\/lucas\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">access<\/a> to a hospital with lung screening. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/oeps.wv.gov\/cancer\/documents\/data\/burdenreport2022.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Half<\/a> of its lung cancer cases are not caught until Stage 4, when treatment options are limited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">LUCAS, which is run by the West Virginia University Cancer Institute, hit the road in 2021.
