Company Wants to Take Your Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Years ago, when I started writing about Silicon Valley\u2019s efforts to replace workers with artificial intelligence, most tech executives at least had the decency to lie about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re not automating workers, we\u2019re <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">augmenting<\/em> them,\u201d the executives would <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/06\/business\/the-robots-are-coming-for-phil-in-accounting.html\" title>tell me<\/a>. \u201cOur A.I. tools won\u2019t destroy jobs. They\u2019ll be helpful assistants that will free workers from mundane drudgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Of course, lines like those \u2014 which were often intended to reassure nervous workers and give cover to corporate automation plans \u2014 said more about the limitations of the technology than the motives of the executives. Back then, A.I. simply wasn\u2019t good enough to automate most jobs, and it certainly wasn\u2019t capable of replacing college-educated workers in white-collar industries like tech, consulting and finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That is starting to change. Some of today\u2019s A.I. systems can write software, produce detailed research reports and solve complex math and science problems. Newer A.I. \u201cagents\u201d are capable of carrying out long sequences of tasks and checking their own work, the way a human would.
