But often it\u2019s not so easy to do this for ourselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">We can be our own harshest critics. Practicing a little self-compassion, though, goes a long way. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11659685\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Research shows<\/a> that when people go through challenges or stressful situations, those who display more self-compassion are more resilient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe can say, \u2018I made a mistake,\u2019 as opposed to saying, \u2018I am a mistake,\u2019\u201d said Kristin Neff, an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin who has studied self-compassion for more than two decades. \u201cIt\u2019s a healthier alternative to self-esteem, because it\u2019s not about judging yourself positively, it\u2019s just about being helpful and kind to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-67fd4247\">What is self-compassion?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Self-compassion is the process of expressing support, warmth and understanding toward yourself during difficult times \u2014 and recognizing that you aren\u2019t alone in your imperfections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It arises from mindfulness, which involves staying focused on the present moment without judgment. Self-compassionate people can identify when they are feeling defeated or inadequate, but avoid becoming lost in those feelings so that they can<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>respond to themselves with kindness instead of ruminating, Dr. Neff said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Being kind to yourself doesn\u2019t mean hosting a pity party. Our suffering is not unique \u2014 flaws and failures are part of what make us human.
