Such annoying costs that creep in at the end of the transaction are widely known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/19\/travel\/junk-fees-ftc-rentals-hotels.html\" title>junk fees<\/a>, which complicate the process of making apples-to-apples price comparisons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A Federal Trade Commission <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/05\/ftc-rule-unfair-or-deceptive-fees-take-effect-may-12-2025\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">rule went into effect<\/a> this month preventing hotels, vacation rentals and ticketing services for live entertainment events from obfuscating extra costs. Those types of businesses are now required to show an upfront price that includes all fees, and they are not allowed to tack on any at the end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This win for consumers will radically change the way we make bookings online for travel and entertainment. The F.T.C. estimates that Americans waste 53 million hours a year comparing prices on live-event tickets and short-term lodging.
