But he was unable to bring charges related to a cache of photos found on the officer\u2019s work computer featuring lurid images of minors created by artificial intelligence. When the computer was seized, in November, creating digital fakes was not yet considered a crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since then, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.palegis.us\/statutes\/unconsolidated\/law-information\/view-statute?txtType=PDF&amp;SessYr=2024&amp;ActNum=0125.&amp;SessInd=0\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">statewide ban<\/a> on such content has taken effect. While it came too late to apply to the police officer\u2019s case, the state\u2019s attorney general, Dave Sunday, has already used the law to charge <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.attorneygeneral.gov\/taking-action\/ag-sundays-child-predator-unit-files-its-first-a-i-involved-child-sexual-abuse-material-charge-since-passing-of-new-pa-law\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">another man<\/a> who was accused of having 29 files of A.I.-generated <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/22\/technology\/ai-csam-cybertipline.html\" title>child sexual abuse material<\/a> in his home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the past two years, American legislators have grown increasingly alarmed by the threat of malicious deepfakes. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/30\/us\/politics\/ai-child-sex-abuse.html\" title>Sexual images<\/a> of middle school students <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/08\/technology\/deepfake-ai-nudes-westfield-high-school.html\" title>have been digitally faked<\/a> without their permission. Vice President JD Vance <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance\/status\/1904222280655286776\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">disavowed<\/a> an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2025\/03\/viral-posts-share-phony-leaked-audio-of-vance-criticizing-musk\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">almost certainly inauthentic clip<\/a> that mimicked his voice to criticize Elon Musk. An ad featuring an A.I.-generated version of the actress Jamie Lee Curtis was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-05-13\/jamie-lee-curtis-explains-why-she-pushed-back-against-fake-ai-instagram-ad\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">removed<\/a> from Instagram only after she posted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJkBA6nRO3I\/?img_index=1\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a public complaint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Legislators are responding. Already this year, 26 laws governing various kinds of deepfakes have been enacted, following 80 in 2024 and 15 in 2023, according to the political database <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/legislation.ballotpedia.org\/ai-deepfakes\/home\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ballotpedia<\/a>. This month <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/04\/22\/bree-smith-inspired-bill-battling-online-deep-fakes-passed-in-legislature\/83210340007\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in Tennessee<\/a>, sharing deepfake sexual images without permission became <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/wapp.capitol.tn.gov\/apps\/Billinfo\/default.aspx?BillNumber=SB1346&amp;ga=114\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a felony<\/a> that carries up to 15 years of prison time and as much as $10,000 in fines. Iowa enacted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/iowacapitaldispatch.com\/2024\/03\/06\/bills-addressing-ai-created-porn-misleading-content-pass-iowa-house\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">two bills<\/a> related to sexually explicit deepfakes last year, one of which established sexual images of children generated by A.I. as a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,245 fine for the first offense.
