A.I. largely remains the domain of an app on phones, despite <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/06\/technology\/humane-ai-pin.html\" title>efforts by start-ups<\/a> and others to move it into devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now OpenAI, the world\u2019s leading A.I. lab, is taking a crack at that riddle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday, Sam Altman, OpenAI\u2019s chief executive, said the company was paying $6.5 billion to buy io, a one-year-old start-up created by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/21\/technology\/jony-ive-apple-lovefrom.html\" title>Jony Ive<\/a>, a former top Apple executive who designed the iPhone.
