Then, a couple of odd things happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When she tried to call her other dog, \u201cI couldn\u2019t speak,\u201d she said. As she walked downstairs to let them into the yard, \u201cI noticed that my right hand wasn\u2019t working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But she went back to bed, \u201cwhich was totally stupid,\u201d said Ms. Kramer, now 54, an office manager in Muncie, Ind. \u201cIt didn\u2019t register that something major was happening,\u201d especially because, reawakening an hour later, \u201cI was perfectly fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So she \u201cjust kind of blew it off\u201d and went to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s a common response to the neurological symptoms that signal a T.I.A., a transient ischemic attack or ministroke. At least <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15731465\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">240,000 Americans<\/a> experience one each year, with the incidence <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7838926\/#H1-3-JOI200138\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">increasing sharply with age<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Because the symptoms disappear quickly, usually within minutes, people don\u2019t seek immediate treatment, putting them at high risk for a bigger stroke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Kramer felt some arm tingling over the next couple of days and saw her doctor, who found nothing alarming on a CT scan.
