Some patients obsess over thoughts that they might hurt someone, while others fixate on certain aspects of their personal relationships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The comedian Maria Bamford, for example, has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/20\/magazine\/the-weird-scary-and-ingenious-brain-of-maria-bamford.html\" title>called her O.C.D.<\/a> \u201cunwanted thoughts syndrome.\u201d On \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert,\u201d she shared a story about how she couldn\u2019t stop thinking horrific thoughts about her family members. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On social media, people describe many types of obsessions and compulsions: \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@kayleebullen\/video\/7391176157401517355?lang=en\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">relationship O.C.D.<\/a>,\u201d \u201csexual orientation O.C.D.\u201d or \u201cemotional contamination O.C.D.\u201d These aren\u2019t separate diagnoses, but rather they are different expressions of the same disorder \u2014 much like how people with phobias can suffer from different fears, said Dr. Carolyn Rodriguez, an O.C.D. expert and a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford Medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-2\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Understanding these distinctions can help clinicians tailor a precise treatment plan, she added. And they\u2019re important for the public to grasp as well.
