Francis, a professor of otolaryngology at the Duke University School of Medicine. But <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-hearing\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">55 percent<\/a> of U.S. adults have disabling hearing loss when they\u2019re 75 and older. And if hearing loss goes untreated, it can raise your risk of developing conditions like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaotolaryngology\/fullarticle\/2813302\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dementia<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/neurology\/articles\/10.3389\/fneur.2024.1446262\/full\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your ears. And the longer you\u2019re exposed, the more likely it is that your hearing will be damaged, said Dr. Dunia Abdul-Aziz, a board-certified otolaryngologist at Harvard Medical School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hearing an extremely loud sound, such as an explosion, even once can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/noise-induced-hearing-loss\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cause permanent hearing<\/a> damage.
