In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/n.neurology.org\/lookup\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000213562\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology<\/a>, researchers from the United States and China reported that people who consumed a lot of ultraprocessed foods were more likely to develop early signs of the disease than people who consumed less of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The finding is an association, not proof that ultraprocessed foods cause Parkinson\u2019s disease, a progressive and incurable condition marked by tremors, muscle stiffness and other symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But studies like this one are critical for finding links between what we eat and neurological diseases, said Dr. Silke Appel Cresswell, a neurologist at the Pacific Parkinson\u2019s Research Centre at the University of British Columbia who was not involved with the study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s already established that what we eat plays a role in developing conditions such as heart disease, she said, but \u201cwe\u2019re doing a bit of catch-up\u201d when it comes to how it affects brain health. \u201cThis is where we need to start.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-90a1cc3\">What the New Study Found<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ultraprocessed foods and drinks are those made with ingredients you wouldn\u2019t typically find in a home kitchen.
