In 2018, after Mr. Musk left in a power struggle, Mr. Altman attached OpenAI to a for-profit company so he could raise the billions of dollars needed to build A.I. technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the nonprofit retained its grip in what become an unorthodox structure that some saw as an albatross to the company\u2019s growth. Last year, Mr. Altman and his company began working on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/17\/technology\/openai-nonprofit-control.html\" title>a plan to shift control from the nonprofit to OpenAI\u2019s investors<\/a>, so that it would be more attractive to investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company, however, backtracked from that plan and the nonprofit will now maintain control. He added that the new change \u201csets us up to have a more understandable structure to do the things that a company like our has to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">OpenAI said that it is still negotiating the nonprofit\u2019s stake in the new corporation and that the nonprofit would pick the board members of the new corporation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Japanese conglomerate SoftBank recently led a $40 billion funding round in OpenAI that values the company at $300 billion.
