The early vote tally on Saturday night was \u201cwell past\u201d the majority needed to approve the incorporation of Starbase, an election official said.<\/p>\n

Members of a South Texas community that has served as the hub of Elon Musk\u2019s rocket launch company, SpaceX, voted on Saturday to formally establish a new city called Starbase<\/a>, fulfilling one of Mr. Musk\u2019s long-held dreams.<\/p>\n

At the time the polls closed at 7 p.m., 173 out of 177 votes were in favor<\/a> of incorporating the city of Starbase, according to Cameron County, which administered the vote.<\/p>\n

There are 283 eligible voters, said Remi Garza, the elections administrator for the county. About 40 votes were left to be counted, Mr. Garza said, but the early vote tally was \u201cwell past\u201d the majority requirement need to approve the incorporation.<\/p>\n

The community, known to locals as Boca Chica, covers about 1.5 square miles on a spit of land that brushes up against the Mexican border.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

SpaceX broke ground in the area in 2014<\/a>, and it has since become the company\u2019s central hub and launch site, as well as home to hundreds of its employees.<\/p>\n

On his social media platform, X, Mr. Musk has referred to the area as Starbase<\/a> more than a dozen times in the past four years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica \/ Starbase that I rent from SpaceX,\u201d Mr. Musk wrote<\/a> in June 2021. \u201cIt\u2019s kinda awesome though.\u201d<\/p>\n

In December, people living around the company offices and launch site filed a petition<\/a> to officially establish the city of Starbase, Texas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
