It puts the future of the assessment, which is required by Congress, in doubt.<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump administration has dismissed the hundreds of scientists and experts who had been compiling the federal government\u2019s flagship report on how global warming is affecting the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The move puts the future of the report, which is required by Congress and is known as the National Climate Assessment, into serious jeopardy, experts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since 2000, the federal government has published a comprehensive look every few years at how rising temperatures will affect human health, agriculture, fisheries, water supplies, transportation, energy production and other aspects of the U.S. economy. The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nca2023.globalchange.gov\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">last climate assessment came out in 2023<\/a> and is used by state and local governments as well as private companies to help prepare for the effects of heat waves, floods, droughts and other climate-related calamities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, researchers around the country who had begun work on the sixth national climate assessment, planned for early 2028, received an email informing them that scope of the report \u201cis currently being re-evaluated\u201d and that all contributors were being dismissed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are now releasing all current assessment participants from their roles,\u201d the email said. \u201cAs plans develop for the assessment, there may be future opportunities to contribute or engage.
