The New York Times <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/15\/science\/columbia-cancer-surgeon-sam-yoon-flawed-data.html\" title>reported last month<\/a> that a medical journal in 2022 had quietly taken down a stomach cancer study by the researchers after an internal inquiry by the journal found ethics violations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite that study\u2019s removal, the researchers \u2014 Dr. Sam Yoon, chief of a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/columbiasurgery.org\/about\/division-surgical-oncology\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cancer surgery division<\/a> at Columbia University\u2019s medical center, and Changhwan Yoon, a more junior biologist there \u2014 continued publishing studies with suspicious data. Since 2008, the two scientists have collaborated with other researchers on 26 articles that the sleuth, Sholto David, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/3D73435F407FA694BEA3D7B46ED4C0#7\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">publicly<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/forbetterscience.com\/2023\/11\/01\/memorial-sloan-kettering-paper-mill\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">flagged<\/a> for misrepresenting experiments\u2019 results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of those articles was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oncotarget.com\/article\/28560\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">retracted last month<\/a> after The Times asked publishers about the allegations. In recent weeks, medical journals have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41419-024-06609-6\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">retracted<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41388-024-02962-0\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">three<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41419-024-06608-7\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">additional<\/a> studies, which described new strategies for treating cancers of the stomach, head and neck. Experts said the episode illustrated not only the extent of unreliable research by top labs, but also the tendency of scientific publishers to respond slowly, if at all, to significant problems once they are detected.
