But since Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took charge of H.H.S., the Trump administration has indicated that it will stop funding research on the health effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The N.I.H. said in an internal document obtained by The New York Times that it was the agency\u2019s new policy \u201cnot to prioritize\u201d research related to climate change. The document also described the organization\u2019s intent not to fund research on gender identity, vaccine hesitancy or diversity, equity and inclusion. N.I.H. employees were instructed to tell researchers to \u201cremove all\u201d mention of the topics and resubmit their applications, even if the main focus was unrelated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The policy shift on climate change, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/nih-funding-climate-change-public-health\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">first reported by ProPublica<\/a>, stands to drastically limit U.S.-based research into its health effects, which tries to answer questions like whether events like wildfires and heat waves can affect cardiovascular health and pregnancy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokeswoman for H.H.S. said in a statement that the agency was \u201ctaking action to terminate research funding that is not aligned with N.I.H. and H.H.S. priorities.\u201d Later, an N.I.H. spokeswoman sent a statement with slightly different wording, saying the agency was \u201ctaking action to review, and in some cases freeze or terminate\u201d funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Both spokeswomen said the N.I.H. and H.H.S. were prioritizing research that they believed \u201cdirectly affects the health of Americans\u201d and was in line with the \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d agenda.
