They are holding up pictures of their children.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 hesJxn\">BBC<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Doctors in two end-of-life cases can be named, the Supreme Court has ruled, after the parents of two children said they wanted to &#8220;tell their story&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Isaiah Haastrup, aged 12 months, and six-year-old Zainab Abbasi were at the centre of life support treatment disputes at the High Court in London before their deaths in 2018 and 2019 respectively.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">During the proceedings, court orders were put in place barring doctors involved in the children&#8217;s care from being publicly named indefinitely.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Giving the ruling, President of the Supreme Court Lord Reed said the need for restriction of freedom of speech must be &#8220;established convincingly&#8221;, and that it was not by the NHS trusts in the case.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-55919683\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\">Isaiah suffered &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; brain damage<!-- --><\/a> after being deprived of oxygen at birth and died in March 2018.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Outside the court, Isaiah&#8217;s father Lanre Haastrup said the decision would &#8220;benefit the public at large&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;The court has emphatically stated no doctor can hide.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jFCfG\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 cOpVbP hide-when-no-script\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/922008d0-1aae-11f0-937a-b7563ef6ccc0.jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Lanre Haastrup is standing in front of crowds outsdie the Supreme Court. inherited neurodegenerative condition and died in September 2019.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Her mother Dr Abbasi said: &#8220;If something goes wrong, you should stand up and say, &#8216;Yes, this went wrong.&#8217;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t imagine how much NHS money has been spent on this court case.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Zainab&#8217;s father Dr Abassi added: &#8220;The story is going to be told.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 DkKTF\">Unanimous dismissal<!-- --><\/h2>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">A Court of Appeal ruling in 2023 &#8211; allowing the clinicians to be named &#8211; was challenged by the two trusts involved, Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and King&#8217;s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The case was heard at the UK&#8217;s highest court <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cmj6egzge6zo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\">in April 2024<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the appeal.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In the written judgment, Lord Reed and Lord Briggs said: &#8220;Weight can be given to the importance of protecting the medical and other staff of public hospitals against unfounded accusations and consequent abuse.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;However, the court should also bear in mind that the treatment of patients in public hospitals is a matter of legitimate public interest.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The court also declined an application from the trusts to continue the injunction for a further 21 days.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Lords Reed and Briggs said: &#8220;A reasonable duration would be until the end of the proceedings and, in the event that they terminate with the child&#8217;s death or the grant of the declaration sought, for a subsequent cooling off period.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The justices ruled that the doctors&#8217;
