In high school, I got called \u201cBird Legs,\u201d and in college, I picked up the nickname \u201cStretch.\u201d I tried to bulk up, but every time I tried, say, bench press, it just felt like too much work and not much fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But as I\u2019ve gotten older, I\u2019ve realized that lifting weights is probably the only way I can keep doing the things I love. In my 20s, I stayed in shape by having fun \u2014 hiking, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/22\/well\/move\/fitness-bouldering-rock-climbing.html\" title>rock climbing<\/a> and kayaking. Now, in my 40s, I work out every day so I can occasionally have fun without injuring myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So, over the past few years I\u2019ve come up with a strength routine that I actually enjoy. And the secret is obvious, now that I know it: I do what I like to do, and I prioritize showing up over following a specific routine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No professional trainer in her right mind would recommend this program as an efficient way to build strength or muscle mass. But nevertheless, a few experts I spoke to said I might be onto something.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-c5d501f\">Focus on what you enjoy.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Each morning, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/03\/well\/move\/cardio-weight-lifting.html\" title>I warm up on<\/a> a stationary bike. Then I give myself permission to do whatever I\u2019m in the mood for. Hamstring curls? Nah. Flies? Meh. I think today is a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/17\/well\/move\/gym-workout-battle-rope.html\" title>battle ropes<\/a> day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are certain exercises I know I have to do somewhat regularly to stay strong and avoid injury \u2014 even though <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/06\/well\/move\/least-favorite-exercises.html\" title>I hate them<\/a>. For me, those are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/10\/well\/squats-knees-tips.html\" title>squats<\/a> and planks.
