Uh oh!<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db415-H.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Research shows<\/a> that over a third of U.S. adults have experienced back pain during a three-month period \u2014 but few treatments actually work, according to a new <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/well\/lower-back-pain-treatments-nsaids.html\" title>study that analyzed hundreds of trials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So I thought it might be helpful to focus on how to prevent back pain in the first place. I\u2019ve asked orthopedic doctors for their best tips.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-7b752b55\"><span>Skip the \u201cB.L.T.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">My car incident \u201cis what we euphemistically call the B.L.T.,\u201d or the bend, lift and twist, said Dr. Arthur L. Jenkins III, a neurosurgeon in New York City who specializes in spinal surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Doing all three actions at once, whether by shoveling snow or extracting a child from a car seat, \u201cmaximizes the stress on the disc, making it more likely to rupture,\u201d Dr. Jenkins said. \u201cAs a spine surgeon, I would never do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you are about to B.L.T., take a beat and try to do each motion separately, Dr. Jenkins said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When lifting an object, make sure both feet are planted and your weight is evenly distributed, said Dr. Gbolabo Sokunbi, a spine surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Then lift from your legs instead of your arms and back, he said.
