One child has died from the disease, the first such death in a decade. Related cases have been reported in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Chihuahua, Mexico. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is going to be a large outbreak,\u201d Katherine Wells, director of public health in Lubbock, Texas, said at a recent news briefing. \u201cAnd we are still on the side where we are increasing the number of cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m really thinking this is going to be a year long,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some doctors in West Texas said in interviews that they had given up hope that a vaccination campaign could end the outbreak. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Ron Cook, also a state health official in Lubbock, said he had resigned himself to the fact that the outbreak will infect many more children, and may kill again. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u201c<\/strong>It\u2019s just going to have to burn through the community<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">,\u201d <\/em>Dr. Cook said. \u201cThat\u2019s where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So far, cases have been centered in a large Mennonite community in Gaines County, which has had historically low vaccination rates.
