It was the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/20\/world\/africa\/extreme-heat-south-sudan-schools-climate.html\" title>second time in less than a year<\/a> that the country\u2019s schools closed to protect young people from the deadly effects of extreme heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Climate change, largely caused by the burning of fossil fuels in rich nations, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/women-and-girls-continue-to-bear-disproportionate-impacts-of-heatwaves-in-south-sudan-that-have-become-a-constant-threat\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">made at least one week of that heat wave 10 times as likely, and 2 degrees Celsius hotter<\/a>, according to a new study by World Weather Attribution. Temperatures in some parts of the region soared above 42 degrees Celsius, or 107 degrees Fahrenheit, in the last week of February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The analysis used weather data, observations and climate models to get the results, which have not been peer reviewed but are based on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ascmo.copernicus.org\/articles\/6\/177\/2020\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">standardized methods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">South Sudan, in the tropical band of East Africa, was torn apart by a civil war that led to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/03\/world\/africa\/pope-francis-south-sudan.html\" title>independence from Sudan in 2011<\/a>.
