And I\u2019ve given away <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/27\/well\/family\/declutter-hoarding-sentimental.html\" title>sentimental clutter<\/a> like a hand-me-down china set I haven\u2019t used for a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s gratifying to have a newly empty shelf, but resisting the urge to load it with new stuff can be tough. When you \u201cturn off the shopping tap,\u201d though, you save money, have fewer things to maintain, and are more eco-friendly, said Ashlee Piper, a sustainability consultant for businesses and individuals and the author of the forthcoming guidebook \u201cNo New Things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I asked Piper and other experts for their best tips to stop buying stuff you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-47796c11\"><span>Make purchasing less convenient.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shopping has become a \u201cfrictionless experience,\u201d Piper said, allowing you to buy things at a touch of a button. So creating friction will help you buy less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One way to do this is to delete your credit card information from your accounts on online shops so that it takes longer to make a purchase, Piper said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHaving to get up, get your wallet, dislodge your credit card, and tap the number in is enough time to take a breath and think: \u2018Do I really need this? What the heck am I going to do with this?\u2019\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And block any emails, texts or push notifications from retailers, Piper said.
