But in her private life, cycling was her absolute passion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI cycled for daily mobility,\u201d she said in a phone interview, \u201cand a holiday wasn\u2019t complete without taking a bike along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like many people, she had cycled as a child. But when she got her driver\u2019s license at age 16, like most teenagers in American towns like Cary, Ill., the Chicago suburb where she grew up, the car was her main means of transport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That changed when she was studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany, where \u201cabsolutely everybody cycled.\u201d There, she said, \u201cI rediscovered cycling.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now 56, she is the chief executive of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ecf.com\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">European Cyclists\u2019 Federation<\/a> (E.C.F.), a Brussels-based nongovernmental organization that advocates cycling as a sustainable and healthy form of transport and leisure. The conversation has been edited and condensed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Why is the federation\u2019s work necessary?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s a chance to make a big difference to people\u2019s health, the environment and the livability of cities. Transport is responsible for about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-10\/Transportation%20Report%202021_FullReport_Digital.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">27 percent of global carbon emissions<\/a>. Road vehicles account for about three quarters of transport CO2 emissions, and this isn\u2019t decreasing.
