The first, she said, is suffering from the symptoms associated with this <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/01\/magazine\/menopause-hot-flashes-hormone-therapy.html\" title>life phase<\/a>, but is also wary of hormone therapy because she\u2019s heard there are health risks associated with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The second kind of patient is almost the exact opposite: she may not have symptoms at all, but nonetheless is asking for hormones because she\u2019s heard they will make her healthier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe seem to like these extremes,\u201d said Dr. Christmas, the director of the Menopause Program and Center for Women\u2019s Integrated Health at the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prescription data reflects a persistent anxiety around the health risks: In a study <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2823976?utm_campaign=articlePDF&amp;utm_medium=articlePDFlink&amp;utm_source=articlePDF&amp;utm_content=jamahealthforum.2024.3128\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published in September<\/a>, researchers found that only 5 percent of menopausal women used hormones in 2020 despite the fact that roughly 80 percent of women experience symptoms. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On the flip side, in the last few years, a growing number of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/30\/well\/dr-mary-claire-haver-menopause.html\" title>social media influencers<\/a> and celebrities, like Oprah Winfrey, have loudly endorsed hormone therapy, presenting it as a \u201cmagic elixir,\u201d Dr. Christmas said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNow there\u2019s this messaging that every woman who is menopausal should be on hormone therapy,\u201d she said.
