I can\u2019t write a single line of Python, JavaScript or C++. Except for a brief period in my teenage years when I built websites and tinkered with Flash animations, I\u2019ve never been a software engineer, nor do I harbor ambitions of giving up journalism for a career in the tech industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And yet, for the past several months, I\u2019ve been coding up a storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among my creations: a tool that transcribes and summarizes long podcasts, a tool to organize my social media bookmarks into a searchable database, a website that tells me whether a piece of furniture will fit in my car\u2019s trunk and an app called LunchBox Buddy, which analyzes the contents of my fridge and helps me decide what to pack for my son\u2019s school lunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These creations are all possible thanks to artificial intelligence, and a new A.I. trend known as \u201cvibecoding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Vibecoding, a term that was popularized by the A.I. researcher <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/karpathy.ai\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Andrej Karpathy<\/a>, is useful shorthand for the way that today\u2019s A.I. tools allow even nontechnical hobbyists to build fully functioning apps and websites, just by typing prompts into a text box. You don\u2019t have to know how to code to vibecode \u2014 just having an idea, and a little patience, is usually enough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s not really coding,\u201d Mr. Karpathy <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/karpathy\/status\/1886192184808149383\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> this month. \u201cI just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy paste stuff, and it mostly works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">My own vibecoding experiments have been aimed at making what I call \u201csoftware for one\u201d \u2014 small, bespoke apps that solve specific problems in my life. These aren\u2019t the kinds of tools a big tech company would build.
