And health officials have warned that they expect more people to fall ill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The outbreaks come as the rate of childhood vaccinations, including against measles, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/01\/13\/upshot\/vaccination-rates.html\" title>have fallen<\/a>. Most of the measles cases in recent outbreaks have been among people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown. Many have been young children, who are at particularly high risk. An unvaccinated child <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/26\/us\/texas-measles-outbreak-death.html\" title>died in Texas from measles<\/a>, health officials reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Vaccines are the most effective tools to combat measles. Breakthrough cases \u2014 infections among the vaccinated \u2014 are extremely rare.
