Keep running!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I was using the run-walk method, a plan that incorporates intentional walk breaks during runs, and this 30-second walk gave me a chance to catch my breath and take a sip from my water bottle before running again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I knew that, for me, walking wasn\u2019t a sign of struggle. Still, I couldn\u2019t resist letting the spectator know. So I smiled and shouted back: \u201cIt\u2019s a STRATEGY!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many training plans recommend the run-walk method as an option for beginners \u2014 an on-ramp to continuous running. But for me, it has become the key to maintaining a running habit while navigating unpredictable work schedules, pregnancies and parenting. I made the switch to run-walking a decade ago while training for my first marathon, and I have no plans to go back. It has made 20-mile training runs feel doable and has carried me across dozens of finish lines \u2014 at the same overall pace as when I ran continuously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe misconception is that it has to lead to continuous running,\u201d said Pamela Geisel, an exercise physiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
