The M.R.I. could pick up on traces of cancer or other diseases, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the post was too simple, the University of Sydney public health researcher Brooke Nickel thought when she saw it in August 2023. What about the possible harms, she wondered? The test might find an extremely early stage cancer that would lead to a patient receiving invasive treatment, even though the disease may never have progressed to something more serious. Ms. Kardashian\u2019s post made it seem like there were only upsides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That post, and others like it, prompted Dr. Nickel to look into how other celebrities and influencers promote increasingly popular medical tests such as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/19\/well\/live\/mri-prenuvo-full-body-scan.html\" title>full-body M.R.I. scans<\/a>. They also examined posts for products that claim to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/10\/health\/cancer-blood-tests.html\" title>detect cancer in blood<\/a> or analyze <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/16\/health\/fertility-test-ovarian-reserve.html\" title>a hormone<\/a> linked to fertility, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/03\/well\/live\/men-tesosterone-tests-ads.html\" title>testosterone levels<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/02\/22\/well\/eat\/gut-microbiome-health.html\" title>the gut microbiome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The results of that study, which scrutinized nearly 1,000 TikTok and Instagram posts from accounts with hundreds of millions of combined followers, were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2830758\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published Wednesday.<\/a> The paper found that an overwhelming majority of these posts were misleading, painting an overly rosy picture of these tests and rarely including scientific evidence. Only 15 percent mentioned potential harms.
